A Norwegian Jazz Quintet in Concert

Consisting of five musicians highly regarded in the European jazz scene and with a considerable track records in the United States, Friends & Neighbors will present its first South Carolina concert, at 701 Center for Contemporary Art on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, 8:00 p.m. Admission is $10 for 701 CCA members and $12 for non-members.

Friends & Neighbors consists of Thomas Johansson on trumpet, Andre Roligheten on sax and clarinet; Oscar Gronberg on piano; Jon Rune Strom on double bass; and Tollef Ostvang on drums. Several members played at 701 CCA last year as part of the Paal Nillson Love Large Unit and earlier this year at Columbia’s if ART Gallery with legendary saxophone player Joe McPhee.

Friends & Neighbors plays rich original compositions that mixes improvisation with elastic arrangements to create an expressive and holistic concert. Among other jazz outifts Friends & Neighbors musicians play in are the Trondheim Jazzorkester, Frode Gjerstad trio, Albatrosh and Cortex.

One reviewer wrote of the band’s latest album, Hymn for a Hungry Nation, wrorte that Friends & Neighbors is “a very well-oiled machine that without any doubt thunders on.” Norway’s largest daily, Aftenposten, wrote of the record: “Friends & Neighbors stands out as a key player in in the continuation of what was created by Ornette Coleman’s free music (jazz) scene of the 60s. Youthful maturity and close interaction is the quintets precondition for success.”
