With Mullen 2009 – 2013, 701 Center for Contemporary Art presents a recent body of work by veteran Columbia artist Philip Mullen. The exhibition will run from May 2 – June 16, 2013, and the opening reception for the exhibition will be Thursday, May 2, 7 – 9 p.m. The artist will present a gallery talk on Sunday, May 26, 2:00 p.m. The core of Mullen 2009 – 2013 comes from the artist’s current exhibition Mullen 2009 – 2012 at the Burroughs and Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, S.C., which closes on April 25. 701 Center for Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the hiring of a new executive director, Sheldon Paschal, who also is the center’s first and only paid staff member. Paschal began work at 701 CCA February 4, 2013, taking over the position of Wim Roefs, who has been the center’s founding volunteer executive director for the past five years. Roefs will remain the chairman of the 701 CCA board. Paschal is a Columbia native with a background in performing arts. She has worked as a members-relations executive at the Charleston, S.C., Metro Chamber of Commerce. The Stephen Hayes exhibition Cash Crop at Columbia’s 701 Center for Contemporary Art will be held over through March 31, 2013. “The exhibition has had such tremendous response,” 701 CCA board chair Wim Roefs said, “that we have decided to let run through March 31.” The 29-year-old Hayes, who lives in Atlanta, Ga., is in residence at 701 CCA through the end of March. At the core of Cash Crop are 15 life-size sculptures of shackled people placed in boat- or coffin-like structures, with diagrams of captive, warehoused humans in Trans-Atlantic slave ships carved in wood on the back. Columbia, SC] - This Thursday, the Columbia Urban League Young Professionals and Talented Tenth will host a viewing for the 701 Center for Contemporary Art exhibit, Cash Crop, by Stephen Hayes. The exhibit features 15 life-size sculptures of shackled people and symbolizes their voyage in the TransAtlantic slave trade. Going further, the exhibit proposes that the slave trade is not so different from some of today's labor practices.
