701 Center for Contemporary Art, in apartnership with promoter Tom Law, presents on Monday, May 16, 2011, a concert of contemporary solo percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani. The concert will begin at 8:00 p.m.; doors will open at 7:00 p.m.701 CCA’s current exhibition, SC3D, will be on view.

Nakatani’s music is based in improvised/experimental music, jazz, free jazz, rock, and noise, yet his work retains the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music.The Japanese artist creates his own instrumentation using drum sets, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, bells, and various sticks and bows.

Originally from Osaka, Japan, Nakatani presentslive solo and ensemble performances around the world. He has released more than 50 CD recordings, including his most recent solo percussion album entitled “Abiogenesis” (2010). Nakatani teaches master classes and workshops at the university level and heads H&H Production, an independent record label and recording studio based in Easton, Pennsylvania. A performing artist for the Pennsylvania Performing Artist on Tour (PennPat) roster, Nakatani has also received a Bronx Arts Council Individual Artist grant.
