Ian J. Welch

Ian J. Welch (b. 1987) is an artist, printmaker and educator living and working in Hampton County, SC. Originally from Toledo Ohio, Welch received his BFA in Studio Art with dual focuses in printmaking and drawing from Bowling Green State University in 2011 and his MFA in Studio Art with a focus in printmaking from Northern Illinois University in 2016. 

Upon returning to Toledo in 2016, Welch worked as an adjunct professor at Bowling Green State University, Owens Community College and Adrian College as well as working as the Gallery Manager and Curator at Gathered Glassblowing Studio. Welch relocated to South Carolina in 2021 to accept a position as Assistant Professor and Curator at South Carolina State University. 

Welch recognized the need for quality arts education in K-12 settings, and left his appointment at SC State to become a certified Visual Arts Teacher for Hampton County School District in 2022.

Welch maintains an active exhibition record, including exhibiting with the International Print Center of New York, the Telfair Museum of Art, ArtFields SC, and Manifest Gallery as well as multiple solo exhibitions. Welch has received numerous awards for his work, including the Curators Award for the 2022 Connect: Collect portfolio and the Morgan Award of Merit at the Morgan Papermaking Conservatory’s 11th Annual Juried Exhibition in 2023. 

Welch is a proud advocate for equitable access to the arts, especially in his rural community of HamptonCounty, and volunteers extensively as an Assistant Curator, Art Handler and after-school art instructor with Hampton Friends of the Arts at the Stanley Arts Center and serves on the Advisory Board for the Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage in Ridgeland, SC. Welch also owns and operates Pegboard Press printmaking studio, a space dedicated to printing artist editions and teaching accessible printmaking classes to the public.
