Heather Powers

Heather Powers began her 15-year career as a textile designer with a BFA in Fiber from SCAD. Her first job was working at one of the oldest weaving mills in the US, Churchill Weavers. A foundational understanding of materials, historical research and on-site production has been invaluable as she continues to initiate and collaborate on various global projects involving design, research, and education. For the past decade, she has worked as a design consultant, organizing professional and recently, a personal property appraiser. Her experience gives her an intimate understanding of how individuals engage and live amongst material culture, with a particular focus on artists, craftspeople, and collectors.

In 2021, she earned an MA in Critical & Historical Craft. She continues to study textile history, weaving, and natural dye techniques. Her work explores themes of memory, place, and identity through discarded vintage ephemera and organic materials. She serves as president of the nonprofit International Center for Indigo Culture, which advocates for the art and history of natural indigo dyeing.
