This workshop is a hands-on, community-centered activity that introduces participants to the art of zine-making. Zines—short for magazines are small, self-published booklets—have
historically served as tools for self-expression, cultural commentary, and grassroots collaboration. With their low barrier to entry and emphasis on DIY creativity, zines empower
individuals to share their voices in a tangible, accessible format. Materials will be minimal and cost-effective, emphasizing the accessibility of zine-making while ensuring a rich, collaborative
experience.

Workshop Outcomes:
● Introduction to what a zine is by giving historical context and providing examples
● Exploration of different zine formats, from mini one-page folds, to a more substantial digest-size and finally to collaborative anthologies as a way to curate and focus our work.
● Demonstration of the process of creating and self-publishing a zine with minimal materials.
● Creativity, experimentation, and collaboration is fostered within the local arts community.

Jason Schoonover is a Columbia, SC based artist who makes zines and comics that celebrate DIY publishing and creative collaboration. Originally from South Florida, he grew up on cartoons and comics and has since published his own titles and contributed to independent anthologies nationwide. He holds an AA in Graphic Design from Broward College and a BA in Studio Art from Florida State University.
