Artist Bio
Jordan Sheridan was born in Northeastern Arkansas in 1989. She became a mother to her son, Samuel, in 2017 and began graduate school at the University of South Carolina shortly after. As a mother pursuing an MFA degree, Sheridan’s work organically shifted to include a personal examination of motherhood. This change in research pushed her from working primarily in 2-D painting to 3-D artmaking via large-scale textile installations. Sheridan’s studio practice unites painting, sculpture, and installation as she explores the visual dimensions of identity and motherhood. Since completing her MFA degree, Sheridan has continued exploring these textile landscapes and vibrant paintings, all evolving with her multifaceted experience of motherhood and an underlying query of interconnectedness. Sheridan is currently a full-time faculty instructor and discipline coordinator of painting at the University of South Carolina. She resides with her partner and young children in Columbia, South Carolina.
Artist Statement
In Duality, Jordan Sheridan delves into the intricate dance of opposites that shape our existence, focusing on the profound dualities inherent in the identities of mother and artist. This immersive installation intertwines the complexities of identity, experience, and contrast, capturing the multifaceted nature of life through a paradoxical lens.
For the first time, Sheridan explores the unique medium of glass, leveraging its transparency and fragility to symbolize the delicate balance between opposing forces. Complementing the glasswork, crocheted textiles are interwoven throughout the installation, adding an ethereal and tactile dimension that evokes the warmth and intimacy of human connection. The exhibition invites viewers into a space where boundaries blur, much like the entangled identities of mother and child, and where light—both wave and particle—illuminates the interconnectedness of all things.
Drawing inspiration from quantum physics and the concept of molecular oneness, Duality reflects on the interconnected nature of existence at both micro and macro levels. Through a tapestry of care, connection, and devotion, interspersed with moments of fragmentation and flux, this installation encourages a deeper exploration of identity and the roles we inhabit. It is a visual and tactile experience that resonates universally, embracing the fluidity of identity and finding beauty in the spaces between.
